June is Men’s Health Month
Posted on: June 6, 2013
June is National Men’s Health Month and I wanted to take this opportunity to increase awareness for all the guys out there. It is an unfortunate truth that the majority of men are not aware that every year we have a National Men’s Health Month.
In fact, the medical community has had difficulty making awareness of men’s health issues as successful as awareness of women’s issues. Part of the challenge is that it appears most men in their 20’s and 30’s still think of their pediatrician as their doctor and do not seek regular medical care until their fourth or fifth decade of life, while most women regularly see health care providers since their teenage years.
Also, issues that fall under the umbrella of “Men’s Health”, like prostate health problems, hypogonadism (which may lead to decreased libido), and erectile dysfunction, are seen by our society as expected changes in men as they age. While this may be true, it is also true that early detection and treatment of these conditions can improve them and also prevent or control osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, and prostate cancer.
So guys stay healthy and get a check up with a primary care provider or urologist.
